An Antique Silver Plated Large Salver Or Dish Latin, Church, 1788, French Coin:

A large antique silver plated church, gothic salver, American historical connection ?

Here is a very unusual large antique silver plated church salver with a central crown and armorial motif, and four turquoise coloured cabouchons.

There is wording in Latin in the centre reading “Sit Nomen Domini Benedictum 1788” The English translation would equate to “Blessed Be The Name 1788”.

The following information was sent to me by a very kind user, and appears to shed more light on this piece :

The central design copies a French coin and the inscription reinforced the belief that Louis xvi rules by God's will. The Edict of Versailles, commonly known as the Edict of Tolerance, was an official act that gave non-Catholics in France the right to openly practice their religions as well as legal and civil status, which included the right to contract marriages without having to convert to the Catholic faith. The edict was signed by Louis XVI on 7 November 1787, and registered in the Parlement of Paris of the Ancien Régime on 29 January 1788. Its successful enactment was due to persuasive arguments by prominent French philosophers and literary personalities of the day, including Anne-Robert-Jacques Turgot, the Duc de Choiseul, by Americans such as Benjamin Franklin, and especially by the joint work of Guillaume-Chrétien de Lamoignon de Malesherbes, minister to Louis XVI, and Jean-Paul Rabaut Saint-Étienne, spokesman for the Protestant community in France

This might be an interesting item for someone with the available time to research … it may even prove to be more valuable, but, clearly I am unable to promise that this would be the case, so please only purchase this item for the undoubted decorative attributes that it currently exhibits.

I doubt that the item actually dates as far back as 1788, if so, it is in remarkably good condition.

The quality of the item seems very good indeed. I can hardly see any wear at all to the silver plate. The only marking on the piece, on one side seems to read “Alpaca”. By looking online I have come up with the following details:

Alpaca Silver refers to an alloy that imitates sterling silver. This non-precious bright silvery-grey metal alloy is made up of copper, zinc and nickel and sometimes iron. Alpaca Silver does not contain any real silver; it is just another name for nickel silver. The term for this alloy in Mexico , Central America, and South America is Alpaca Silver rather than Nickel Silver. In 1823 there was a contest among German & Austrian metalwork companies to develop an alloy that most closely appeared similar to silver (visually - not chemically or physically). After the manufacturer, Berndorf AG, trademarked and made popular the brand name Alpacca, this term was used more frequently than the term Nickel Silver. In Germany & Austria and also in Middle and Eastern Europe the term used for this alloy is Alpacca Silver rather than Nickel Silver. Despite its name, nickel silver contains no real silver; and it is also commonly called German Silver or Alpacca Silver.

Alpacca, Alpaca and German Silver are all valued collectibles, BUT do not be fooled! Despite these above names, items made of them contain NO real silver. There are some sellers/stores that will try to pass it off as true silver or silverplate. Some items made from Alpaca, Alpacca, German or Nickel Silver occasionally may be silver plated with either true silver or a form of Nickel Silver.
