This primitive landscape painting was done by an artist named H. R. King. I bought some paintings about 20 years ago from an estate. They were all landscapes and those that were dated were painted between 1905 and 1910. This one is signed but there isn\'t a date. Based on the fact that it was among these other pictures and shows comparable aging I believe it is of the same early 20th century vintage. This was the only pastel in the group of landscapes. The cardboard backing is starting to disintegrate. I removed it to examine the picture. It had been under glass for a century. The first photo shows the painting and the frame without the glass over it. I laid the frame over the top of the picture-so the picture looks like it has a wave in it. It does not. The second photo is the pastel on paper only. You can see the very slight wear along the edges that were under the frame. The third photo shows the beautiful original frame. It has some slight edge wear and is in good condition. The fourth photo is the signature of the artist. The fifth photo is the back of the paper the pastel was drawn on. The final photo shows the cardboard backing that is really fragile, so dried out it cracks easily.This artist had a primitive style. His or her landscapes were really quite good.
