A rare ancient Chinese Northern Qi Dynasty terracotta horse and rider, dating to 550 - 577 AD.
This powerfully modelled piece has the typically strong presence of Northern Qi figures. The horse shown standing foursquare, its head bowed in a pose of measured elegance. The heavily armoured warrior sits proud atop his mount, the arms held calmly to the sides, the face a picture of relaxed poise. There appears an organic relationship between man and beast, the two appear distinct in their body language, yet intimately connected.
The terracotta figures of the brief Northern Qi Dynasty are credited with the revival of a high Chinese artistic style in this medium. This rare figure is a beautiful example of the static yet domineering aesthetic for which Northern Qi sculpture is famous. Due to both its brief existence and the importance of its art, the figures of the Northern Qi are amongst the rarest and most sought after of all ancient Chinese ming-qi.
The piece is accompanied by a thermoluminescence certificate from Oxford Authentication, which scientifically dates it to the Northern Qi period.
