A rare, exceptionally high quality ancient Chineseming-chi figure of a femaleattendant, dating to China\'s NorthernWei Dynasty,386 - 535 A.D. Thiswell modeled and detailed figurine of a ladyhas a serene aura that is not often encountered in the more martial figures of the Northern Wei Dynasty.

The figure isdepicted wearing a thick over cloak and cap, whilstthe hands areheld close together, likely to hold a woodenstaff.The facial features areremarkably well detailed, with a gentle smile adding to the lifelike spirit of the piece.Her features and clothing strongly suggest she is a member of the powerfulXianbei tribe, a nomadic Mongolic people who resided in the cold north-Eastern provinces of ancient China.

The militaristicNorthern Wei Dynasty conquered the small, weak northern Chinese states in the late 4th century AD.

Ezekiel Schloss is one of the most famous names in ancient Chinese ming-chi (terracotta figure) art. Together with his wife Lillian, he was a prolific collector, well respected authority and author of the major publication \"Ancient Chinese ceramic sculpture from Han through T\'ang\". Schloss arrived in the US from Latvia in 1940. He was an accomplished cartoonist, working for many years at the New York times. The Schloss collection is rare in that it truly represents an educated collection of art; Schloss was immersed in Chinese ming-chi art and only collectedbeautiful examples of specific types, as well as the unusual, the charming and the rare.
