This beautiful ancient sculpture displays the unparalleled ability of the ancient Chinese to depict the restrained power and beauty of the horse. Skilfully modelledwith a powerful frame and defined musculature,theanimal is shown standing with its head facing forwards, pricked ears, and docked tail raised in excitement. Thestrikingface isredolent with aggressive energy and vigour, imbuing the piece with a wonderful sense of life.

The rider sits upright with atall, peaked cap, his hands held tighttohis chest.The features are broad and exaggerated, reflecting a sense of disdainful superiority.
