It explores people’s beliefs regarding death and immortality, magic, dreams and divination, deities and the priesthood creation myths, animal worship, symbolism, traditions of mummification, and festivals. Finally it looks at the achievements of Egyptian kings and queens, including military successes and architectural feats like the pyramids and the Great Sphinx, along with art, language and hieroglyphics, discoveries in medicine, astronomy and engineering, and early developments toward the modern calendar.

CONDITION: GOOD. Seemingly unread trade softcover. Algora Publishing (2001) 292 pages. The book is ex-library, there are stickers on the first blank unprinted page in the book, and there\'s a stamp on the top surface of the closed page edges, (visible only when book is closed, not to individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges). HOWEVER judging by the condition of the book and the tightness of the binding, it appears the book is unread, or perhaps merely flipped through a few times. The front cover falls open easily of course (obviously the cover has been opened), however otherwise the pages are very tightly bound. Pages are virtually pristine; clean, unmarked, unmutilated, crisp, tightly bound, seemingly unread. The covers extremely light shelfwear, virtually indiscernible, except the manufacturer\'s plasticine coating (wit which they coat the paper covers), is wrinkled/rippled at the spine head. Of course being an ex-library book it will never been considered a \"shelf trophy\", but nonetheless it is a very clean book, virtually unread, bargain priced. REVIEW: An introduction, for general readers, to the early civilizations along the Nile. It explores the daily routines of people who cherished life and yet lived, on average, only about 35 years. Ruiz describes typical everyday details of family life, food and drink, recreation, clothing, labor, and other areas. She also focuses on ancient Egyptian beliefs, from creation myths to mummification, and achievements: kings, queens, medicine, art, the pyramids, etc.

The Author, Ana Ruiz, is a member of the Staffordshire Egyptology Society (UK) and Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities (Canada). Her fascination with ancient Egypt began 25 years ago, and her delight is clear as she reconstructs and interprets for the reader the documentary images of life along the Nile. She provides a fascinating description of the customs and achievements of the nation, interspersed with quixotic details and charming takes that convey a sense of Egypt’s shimmering spirit as well as its famous and less-famous monuments.

PROFESSIONAL REVIEW:

REVIEW: Canadian Egyptologist Ruiz\'s 33 short chapters deal with different aspects of ancient Egyptian life (e.g., \"Dress and Jewelry,\" \"Wigs and Cosmetics,\" \"Festivals\"). Although the range of topics is exhaustive, the detail of discussion is not the book’s strength, but it does permit the author\'s fascinating narrative to flow unimpeded. Her account of the processes of mummification, for example, is clear and accurate, without needless complication. Her retelling of creation myths, her time line of the long-ago queens and her explanation of the fundamentals of Egyptian symbolism make this an excellent resource for those who know little about the ancient nation and want to begin to learn.

Readers with a working knowledge of the culture will likely be surprised to see that the chapter on architecture is a mere eight pages or that the rich tradition of Egyptian art is dispatched in six. But they might also be surprised by some of the facts Ruiz offers up: an American Civil War-era paper manufacturer imported mummies to make paper inexpensively from the linen wrappings, and a gilded horsefly was a symbol of bravery in battle. Ruiz has made an extremely interesting culture accessible to the casual reader.
