Ancient Egyptian Coptic Limestone Stele Carving - 4th Century AD:
$1546.00

A large ancient Egyptian Coptic limestone stele, dating to the 4th – 5th century AD.

The figure shown within a niche, clad in a long simple tunic which covers his arms and reaches down to the ankles, he is barefoot, typical of the period. With boyish features, this youthful countenance was intended to project an idealised image of the deceased. He appears to hold a lit candle in his left hand, particular attention has been paid to the carving of the face, which has a soft, serene quality, particularly the subdued smile. The ochre pigment around the face is well preserved, as is the black of the hair.

It has often been said that ancient Egypt had a preoccupation with the afterlife, certainly it was a society famed for its desire to be well ordained in the journey into the next world. These artefacts may represent the final moments of that millennia old tradition, produced even as Christianity (with its emphasis on simple monuments) was taking hold, these pagan stones are the final flourishing of an art tradition as old as Egyptian civilisation itself.
