This is a nice ancient Egyptian steatite scarab, dating to the 2nd Intermediate Period(c. 1650 - 1550B.C.) It is simply sculpted with the details of the beetle, the underside decorated with a double cobra, cup and Nefer design.

The Scarab was an ancient and magical manifestation of the god Khepri - an early version of Ra the sun god. To the ancient Egyptians the scarab beetle rolled the sun across the sky, its name in ancient Egyptian means \"to come into being\". This was a popular amulet, worn as pendants and used on finger rings throughout the Egyptian lands.

Today this ancient amulet has survived in good excavated condition, intact with a clear details. One end has a light chip. It can still be worn as a pendant, either threaded through a necklace or hung from a nice chain.
