An ancient Egyptian faience shabti of Hori, member of the Egyptian royal family and High Priest of Ptah, dating to Dynasty XIX during the later reign of Ramesses II or Merneptah, 1225 - 1203 BC.

Modelled in beautiful white faience, the figure is shown mummiform, with a small beard, wearing a short wig with a sidelock signifying Hori’s role as sem priest of Ptah. With painted features including dual hoes, a collar and inscribed vertical column of hieroglyphs reading:

\"Illuminate the Osiris, Hori, justified.\"

A grandson of one of Egypt’s most successful and famous Pharaohs - Ramesses the Great, Hori served as High Priest of Ptah at the end of Ramesses\' reign and would have formed one of his inner circle. As such, this fascinating artefact was produced for a man at the very heart of ancient Egyptian society during its golden age.

The ancient Egyptians believed that the eternal soul of the deceased resided in a paradise known as the \'Field of Reeds\'. With its calm waters and lush vegetation, this fertile Environment was similar to their own earthly world at the banks of the river Nile. Unfortunately however, the dead were also expected to undertake agricultural labour on behalf of the gods; ploughing, sowing, and reaping the crops. For those who wished to avoid this physical strain, shabti (answerer) figures were placed in their burial chambers as alternative workers, imbued with a powerful magic so that they would rise and take the deceased’s place working in the fields.
