Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Pottery Fish Plate - 4th Century BC:
$8000.00

An ancient Apulian Greek red-figure fish plate, dating to the 4th century BC.

Sitting upon a short stem base, with two bream, two molluscs and a spotted torpedo fish around a central garum (fish sauce) recess. The shoulder of the plate decorated with rolling waves, whilst the face itself is gently sloped for collecting juices, ingeniously designed, the shape also recalls the gently rolling sea floor, the source of the bounty.

Some of the most endearing and relatable artefacts from the ancient world, Apulianfish plates are amongst the most iconic of allGreek wares, made to serve succulent morsels of grilled seafood, like the fish and molluscs painted on their surface. Seafood was a basic staple of the ancient Mediterranean diet; keen observers of the natural world, the ancient vase painters so accurately captured the shapes and markings of the fish they depicted that it is possible to identify most of them by species.

Though popular, fish plates are becoming increasingly rare on the private market, especially those with a secure provenance. This beautiful example was published in November 1984 in the catalogue of the prominent Swiss-German sale house Munzen und Medaillen and retains its old collection labels on the base.

Diameter: 8 5/8inches.

Condition: Excellent, unrestored and with original encrustations.

Provenance:

Ex. Swiss private collection, published by Munzen und Medaillen, Basel, November 1984 and with original collection labels on base. A scan of the appropriate pages from the original catalogue will be provided to the new buyer. The catalogue attributes this piece to the Bellies painter.
