Greek Apulian red-figure bell krater
A good sized and vibrant Greek red-figure ceramic bell krater with pedestal base, bell-shaped body and broad everted rim. The body decorated with palmettes below the loop handles and figural decoration comprising:Side A depicts a nude young Satyr, standing left, holding a Thyrsus (long stemmed grass symbolic of Dionysus) in his right hand and a phiale (offering plate) in his right. He wears a diadem in his hair. Opposite the satyr sits a young female lady of fashion, shown wearing diaphanous himation (gown), accentuating the elegant lines of her lower body. She wears sandals, bracelets, earrings, stephane (crown), necklace and saccos (hair net).Side B shows two two himation clad youths each holding a staff. Quartered circle in central field, two jumping weights above, perhaps indicating that they are athletes.Decorated with an olive branch on the underside of the lip, palmettes on the sides, beneath the handles and groundline of meander and dotted squares.The Bell Krater was used by the Ancient Greeks for mixing Wine and Water. The Greeks did not like to drink wine \"neat\" and so mixed it with water for consumption at symposia (social gatherings).
