ATHENA

Athena, also known as Pallas Athena in Greek mythology, was the goddessof warriors, poetry, medicine, wisdom, justice, commerce, crafts, and theinventor of music. Lots to look after!! The Athenians founded the Parthenon on theAcropolis (Athena Parthenos) of her namesake city, Athens, in her honor. Platoevoked her wisdom as the goddess of philosophy.As the goddess of war strategy, she often accompanied Greek war heroesinto battle and on quests. Her battleattire included a high, crested helmet, a spear, an aegis, and other armor.

Thehippocampus, called a seahorse in English, was originally a Greek andPhoenician mythical creature depicted as a horse in its forepart with acoiling, fishlike hindquarter. Poseidon(Greek) and Neptune (Roman) gallopedthrough the seas on a single hippocamp or on a sea-chariot drawn by severalhippocampi.

This coin was likely struck in the Sicilian city of Syracuse. I did not positively attribute it because these coins generally have both Athena and thehippo camp facingleft. It would not have been unusual, however, for the mint to face the figures the opposite way once in a while for reasons lost to the ages. The coin is 15 mm and 2.50 gm.
