This enchanting ancient gold coin was minted by the city of Syracuse, renowned across the ancient Mediterranean, as well as the modern art world, for producing some of the finest most beautiful coins ever made.

Struck under the tyrant Agathokles (361 – 289 BC) – the son of a potter, he rose to become a distinguished and wealthy citizen and was twice banished for trying to seize power. In 317 BC Agathokles took control of Syracuse at the head of a large mercenary army, banishing or murdering all those who opposed him.

This coin belies the ruthless nature of Agathokles\' rise to power and reign over his city. The sublime portrait of the deity Apollo is a stunning miniature work of Classical art.
