A beautifully toned and well provenanced ancient Greek silver 10 litrae coin. Minted under the teenage King, Hieronymos of Syracuse, circa 216 - 215 BC.
The obverse with a superb portrait of the fresh-faced Hieronymos, seen here at just 15 years old. The ruler is shown with plump features, narrow nose and with a thick mop of hair, held down by a thin diadem.
The reverse with a winged thunderbolt, symbol of power and speed. The Greek inscription reading:
ΒΑΣΙΛΕΟΣ ΙΕΡΩΝΥΜΟΥ
\"King Hieronymus\"
MI in tiny letters above.
Hieronymos ascended to the throne during the Second Punic war, a time of major instability in Sicily. Hannibal had just dealt Rome a major blow at the battle of Cannae which seems to have persuaded Hieronymos to switch his loyalties to the Carthaginians. This turned out to be a major mistake, for which Syracuse paid dearly. The teenage monarch did not live to see the repercussions though, he was assassinated by a pro-Roman faction after just 13 months as King.
History remembers Hieronymosas a cruel and debauched ruler, who made foolish errors of judgement and spent his wealth on wild parties and excesses.
