A highly artistic,beautifully toned ancient Greek silver tetradrachm. Minted by one of the greatest cities of antiquity, Syracuse, circa 450 BC.

The obverse (image ii) with the symbol of the Syracusan Gamoroi (aristocracy), a four horse chariot, walking slowly right. The heavyset horses are shown in near tandem, the charioteer is seen leaning slightly forwards, pulling at the reins, as the goddess of victory is depicted above, swooping down from the heavens to crown the horses with a laurel wreath.

The reverse with the head of the water nymph Arethusa, patron deity of the city. She is shown submerged in her fresh water spring, her hair tied back, held in place by a thick headband and bound in a pony tail. She wears a hoop earring and triple necklace as four dolphins swim playfully around. The legend reading:

This beautiful, medallic silver tetradrachm survives from the middle of the 5th Century BC, a time when Syracuse was successfully competing to produce the most beautiful coins in the entire Greek world. It was with coins such as the present piece that the great city earned its fame for artistic brilliance. The reverse die used to strike this coin was clearly engraved by a talented artist, who took great care to depict his patron deity with great poise and elegance, creating a strikingly beautiful emblem for his city
