A high quality, Ancient Gandharansculptured schist stone frieze,dating to approximately 300 A.D.

A beautiful, genuineandpowerful piece, deeply sculpted from a large block of schist rock. The piece possibly constituted a decorative-element from the walls ofa Stupa,the most revered Buddhist religious monument, believed to contain relics of the historical Buddha.

The scene showingthreestanding figures, all facing left,the front most figure shown with long flowing robes, tied at the waist. Each with beautifully cut hair and facial features.

So-called Gandharan Sculpture was produced in parts of modern-day India, Pakistan and Afghanistan from the first century A.D. In the second century BC these areas were ruled by the Graeco-Bactrians, the farthest flung people of the Greek World, who brought with them the beautiful Hellenistic Greek Artistic tradition. This tradition became incorporated into the art of the region, resulting in a kind of \"Graeco-Buddhist\" Art from the 1st to the 3rd Centuries A.D., persisting for centuries later.

Nicol Guerin and Dick Van Oenen were co-authors of Thai Ceramic Art, The Three Religions;a detailed study of 14th - 16th century Thai ceramic wares.
