A central Indian red sandstone head of a deity, possibly Shiva, dating to the 11th century AD.
With an eternal smile, this sculpture has a sense of pure serenity. The simple, delicate modelling of the face, thin almond eyes and small tender mouth is contrasted with the elaborately adorned and beaded headdress above, with a kirtimukha monster mask lying at the centre. Asubtle third eye lies at the centre of the head, the back is flat, suggesting the figure to which this head belonged originally resided within a temple niche.
In an area of the market unfortunately saturated with fakes this is a beautifully sculpted and mounted example, a genuine piece of Indian temple sculpture with a firm provenance.
Height of sculpture alone: 8 ¾ inches.
Height mounted: 13 ¾ inches.
Condition: Good, a fragment of a larger figure. Traces of the original pigment still remain, showing just how vibrant this head would have once appeared, with hues of white, yellow and turquoise. Please note that this piece will arrive with a beautiful bespoke stand, produced by Colin Bowles, mount maker to Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of the United part of a contemporary artist’s collection, acquired in the 1960’s.
