A well provenanced, ancient Near Eastern pottery vessel,dating to the mid 1st millennium BC.

Of elegant form, sitting on a flat base and rising into a plump, tear dropbody, with looped handle andeverted mouth. The shoulder with two adjacent, pointed nodules andthe neck with ridged border.A shapely andattractive piece of ancient pottery.

Height: 9 1/2 inches.

Condition: Excellent. Age related encrustation. Unrestored. Minor hips to mouth.

Provenance:

Ex-Collection of Bonar Sykes (1922 - 1999.) Grandson of Conservative prime minister Andrew Bonar Law (1922 - 1923,) Godson of Rudyard Kipling and Son of key RAF founding member, Sir Frederick Sykes. Sykes enjoyed several illustrious and varied careers, as World War II Royal Navy Officer, Head of Chancery at the British Embassy in Tehran (1961 - 1965,) High Sheriff of Wiltshire and president of the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society. Married to Mary Phipps (1923 - 2002) daughter of Frances Ward and Rt. Hon. Sir Eric Clare Edmund Phipps.

Sykes left Etonand joined the Royal Navy as a Lieutenant, where he took part in both the infamous D-day landings and the Battle of Walcheren Causeway. After the war he went on to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Queens College, Oxford. He began his career at the foreign office in 1949, eventually moving to Tehran in the early 1960\'s as Head of Chancery, where he built up an eclectic collection of ancient Near Eastern ceramics. Sykes love of cultural heritage was also born out through the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society as the longest serving president (1975 - 1985.)
