Ancient Roman Silver Intaglio Ring \"Good Shepherd\" Early Christian 3rd Century:
$472.93

This is nice ancient Roman silver intaglio ring, dating to the 3rd century AD. The ring is in good excavated condition with nodamage or repairs, the bezel has small hole in the side that was caused when the ring was cast. The intaglio is original to the ring and is tightly set in a rubbed over mount on a raised bezel - typical or 3rd century fashion. Sadly the intaglio has a chip, this is very ancient and has plenty or age related wear. The intaglio is cut on a dark red carnelian with a standing figure. The posture of the figure is representative of a shepherd, leaning on his staff. The shepherd during the 3rd and 4th century had connections with early Christianity, symbolizing Jesus Christ as the \"Good Shepherd\". As such it is quite likely that this ring once belonged to an early Christian, during the period of persecutions before it was legalized by Constantine the Great.
