A lovely, pristine example of traditional handcrafted Russian Treenware (Wooden Ware) from the Khokhloma area. The city of Khokhloma has been known for hundreds of years for its lacquerware in a traditional color and design inspired by Eastern Orthodox Church Art. This Russian Folk Art, made for the \"masses,\" became known the world over for its beauty and curious wearability. Russian Wooden Folk Art, ranging from Birch Bark baskets, nesting dolls to gilded Russian Orthodox Icons, has another category, Khokhloma ware, that is both treasured and commonly used daily. The Khokhloma ware, usually seen in Black, Red and Gold, has been found in decorative and utilitarian objects but all inspired by colors found in Orthodox Church Icons. Russian art may seen exotic, even strange, to Westerners. For centuries, wood has been the most abundant natural resource in Russia. Dense forests met almost every possible need for the production of items used in carrying out the daily needs of the \"common\" Russian folk. From construction of commercial buildings, churches and houses to utilitarian treen objects for decoration, household use, serving and eating meals, millions of board feet of lumber has been \"devoured\" in Russia. Using the simple material from trees, Russian artisans have changed Nature\'s forest bounty into items of exquisite artistic beauty. The Khokhloma LAQUERWARE is one of the most iconic and sought after out of the wooden products from Russia. My globetrotting Aunt Billie and Uncle Harry included the purchase of Russian made lacquerware on their final trip to Eastern European ending a lifetime of travel begun in 1930. THIS, AND ONE OTHER TRAY LISTED TODAY, ARE GIFTS FROM THEM THAT I\'VE BOTH USED AND STORED OVER THE YEARS. My aunt and uncle had impeccable taste. They\'ve gifted me with art, lace, chinaware and silver, just to list a few items, this Russian Lacquerware completes the range of their purchases. They\'re gone now but they\'ll always be with me.
NOW, THIS LACQUERWARE TRAY: this tray was selected for purchase because it was decorated in the iconic style of traditional Khokhloma ware. Primarily for the Black background with the most predominant color in the design being red. Red is considered a sacred color to Russian Orthadoxy, used extensively in Russian folk art for that reason. The brilliant scarlet red open flowers are reminiscent of poppies but may be a flower known only to areas in Russia. Greens, Yellow and touches of White complete the color palette. Original paper label is intact! See photos of Label in the center of the back! The label is in Cyrillic, I\'ve studied a few languages but never Eastern dialects using the Cyrillic alphabet. There\'s a string hanger original to the tray. MEASUREMENTS: the tray is 9 3/4\" in diameter. The largest of the flowers is approx 4\" by 4 1/2\". CONDITION: excellent vintage condition. The few times I used this over the years I was always extremely careful to not subject this tray to harsh cleaners, heat or abrasive material. Native Russians are not as \"persnickety\" about their Lacquerware but I knew I could not easily replace it. Consequently, this item is nearly perfect. There\'s no flaw or condition issue to report. There\'s a paper label 100% intact printed in Cyrillic, in the same photograph of the back, you will see the original string hanger. YOU WILL LOVE THIS UNIQUE AND COLORFUL RUSSIAN TRAY! Please expand and review the photographs to see the details. I pack carefully using clean, new material, occasionally utilizing nicely recycled packaging. My home is entirely smoke free. I charge my customers only the actual postage to ship their purchases, estimating the cost of shipping as closely as possible, no hidden fees or mystery charges. A VINTAGE RUSSIAN LACQUERWARE TRAY FROM THE KHOKHLOMA AREA IN PRISTINE CONDITION MADE IN THE TRADITIONAL FOLK ART COLORS AND DESIGN!
