WE HAVE SEVERAL IMPORTANT SILVER PIECES FROM THE SAME PROMINENT RHODE ISLAND ESTATE RUNNING THIS WEEK. ALL ARE ABSOLUTE sales WITH STARTING AT $9.99. MAKE SURE TO VIEW (AND offer ON) THEM ALL.
If you\'re a collector of important antique sterling silver then we have a listing for you! This sterling silver serving tray or salver is from the estate of a family that descends from the famous Brown family (of Brown University) that settled in Providence, Rhode Island, in the early 17th century. It measures 1.5\" in height, 12.75\" in diameter, and weighs a hefty 935.5 grams (2 lbs, 1 oz.). The tray has a scroll and shell pattern rim and stands on three feet. The top of the tray is engraved with a family crest showing crosses and what appear to be two groups of three feet, likely eagle, hawk, or griffin. We haven\'t been able to identify the crest, but perhaps an expert in heraldry will know? The marks on the underside of the tray are the 1769 London date letter, the lion for sterling silver, the London city mark, and a \"EC\" maker\'s mark for Elizabeth Cooke. She was the wife of Samuel Cooke, a silversmith on Foster Lane. Upon his death in 1764 shetook over his business and worked until about 1773. A woman working as a silversmith in 18th-century England was incredibly rare! Overall the tray is in very good antique condition, with a single, no doubt repairable 1.25\" split in the metal along the rim (see photo). We have not attempted to polish or clean this tray since receiving it, in case the buyer prefers this as-found patina. But if you choose to do so, it will polish to a brilliant shine! We are starting this sale at $9.99 with . Good luck offerding!
