Here is one of a number of Napoleonic PRISONER OF WAR made sheep - cow bone leftovers from their meals hand made items I am going to be listing over the next few weeks... from a large collection of Georgian 19th Century Napoleonic Wars items including straw work boxes - bovine cow & sheep bone gaming counters - miniature playing cards - dominoes in various sizes - spinners and larger games boxes.
Here is an antique Georgian cylindrical box with 26 bovine (sheep - mutton, beef - cow) bone counters inside, each one has a capital letter, therefore all 26 representing the alphabet.
A good nursery item, used to learn to read and write. Or made to teach the children of the house.
There is a letter A on the lid with green and red staining, and a faded letter B on the base.
The counters have been lathe turned to make them.
The box measures approx, 1. 1/2 inches in height, the counters measure approx 23mm in diameter (almost 1 inch). It is in overall good condition with some age and use wear, the fine inner screw thread on the lid has half missing (although it does still screw shut just about), and there are fine cracks in the bone, one large crack in the box, see pics.
