This appears to be a pre-civil war era broadaxe. Daniel Simmons made axes in the Cohoes N.Y. area from 1834-1860 when he passed. He had partnered with Levi stillman till 1836 and had two other partners later. The stamping on the axe reads \" D. Simmons & Co. Cohoes N.Y. Cast Steel Warranted \". There is the number 51 stamped on the reverse side. The axe has a basilled edge with one side being flat for hewing. The axe head measures 11-3/8\" x 8-3/8\" x 1-3/8\", 38-3/4\" total length including handle, and weighs 7 lbs 6 oz. I can ship just the axe head for 11.95 in a flat rate box, and to ship the entire axe with the handle would be 29.95 (it is too large for any flat rate box), please let me know your preference at checkout.General Note:Pictures are the best description I can give.
