Vintage Staffordshire transferware bowl/dishDated c 1840 - over 175 years old!brown transfer around the rim of plate The way these were produced is - first the transfer was placed on the plate and then fired in the kiln. the ink would be puton the plate while the paper would burn off. Then the color was hand painted on and then the plate was fired again to lock in and then the clear glaze was applied and fired again.
The set of three marks on the bottom of the plate were what they used to hold the plate up while firing so they could glaze thecomplete bottom of the plate. this method was used in higher end pottery of the time and was used until about 1907in England8 1/4 \" in diameterand about 1 1/4\" tall dish or small plate
