This is a little leather-bound diary that belonged to Maurice/Morris T. Evans from Sandusky, NY (a hamlet in Cattaraugus County, NY). Maurice was very meticulous and interested in record-keeping and note-taking. He kept track of the United States presidents and vice presidents (from Washington to Ulysses S. Grant), and he wrote down his expenses for goods such as sugar, matches, and Tobacco. A significant portion of the journal is filled with daily reflections.Maurice\'s diary entries detail day-to day life in rural New York (mainly doing chores and running errands). He discusses splitting logs and hunting wild animals. Maurice also talks about the weather and personal health. The entries are in pencil, so some are fading a bit, while others are not. Leather cover is a bit scuffed due to age (shown in pictures). However, all pages are attached and the diary is not falling apart. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of an ordinary person in 1870\'s America, and it is one of a kind.
