All hand wrought, blacksmith made, this circa 1740-1770 Rushlight is an exquisite example of the talents of an early blacksmith creating a useful piece of period lighting.

Rushlights were used in Colonial era homes for means of illumination.  A rush reed (like a cat tail reed) would have been soaked in grease or oil and placed between the jaw mechanism to burn as a lighting source.  This piece also features the counterbalance weight being formed into a round socketed tallow candle holder, making the piece able to burn both rush and candles.

Superb period construction includes a tri-legged tabbed footing design.

Stands over 12 7/8\" tall, a nice size perfect for display on a tavern table or candlestand.

Take a moment to \'click\' the images for enlargments and you can see great evidence of period construction and design.  Note the great artistic touch by the original smith to place a \'twist\' design on the piece, a nice subtle element of decoration.

Some expected pitting from age, more so on the candleholder as it was likley cleaned more ofteh, though all-in-all a solid example of Colonial era lighting of English or New England origin.

For references on rushlights see Wallace Nutting\'s volumes on Colonial furnishings as well as Caspall\'s \"Fire and Light Pre-1820\", \"The Sorber Collection\" by Plummer, the Schiffer book of \"Antique Iron\" and more.

This fine piece of period lighting is offered on a five day sale with a low starting offer and .
