Description

This is a rare 18th century example by the accomplished silversmith Samuel Pemberton of Birmingham England.

This vinaigrette is circular in shape and is suspended on chain. It measures 27 mm in diameter. The lid is bright cut and engraved decorated.

As you open the push fit lid you will see a gold finished pierced grill and a hallmarks stamped under the lid. When the grill is pulled off you will see the base of the case which contains the original sponge under which there is another set of hallmarks.

The full hallmarks on the lid are the sovereign\'s head (George III, SP (for Samuel Pemberton), the lion indicating sterling silver quality and a date code U for the year 1792. The partial hallmark on the base is SP for the silversmith\'s initials.

This piece is in very good antique condition. The wear is in keeping with the age and there is no damage or restoration.

Vinaigrettesbecame popular during the 18th century and later as population centres grew. There are many examples of themcrafted in various materials (gold, silver, porcelain etc.), shapes and styles.

They were carried by the ladies or the gentlemen to mask foul odours which was present in the streets due to lack of proper sanitation.A sponge was usually soaked in perfume which was placed inside the base, the grille was then closed over the sponge and the lid shut.

They are usually quite small, lightand potable and used to be carried in the pocket or purse although many were attached to watch chains and bracelets as fobs.

The Lady or Gentlemanwould open the lid and hold the vinaigrette under their nose as they passed through any smelly areas.
