The Liver bird....

The symbol of the city of Liverpool, England. The use of a bird to represent the city dates to the medieval era, but the idea that the \"liver bird\" is a mythical creature specific to Liverpool evolved in the 20th century. The bird is normally represented in the form of a cormorant holding a sprig of broomin its mouth. The sprig of broomwas a homage to King John, broom being a symbol of the royal family of Plantagenet.Keswick\'sproduction patterns for 1906-7 do list the Liver bird as shown on page 141 of Ian Bruce\'s book \"The Loving Eye and Skilful Hand of KSIA\". I believe this was probably made to commemorate Liverpool with regards the Lusitania and Mauretania, a golden age with regards Liverpool shipping !!!

RMS Lusitania ....

ABritish ocean liner, holder of the Blue Riband and briefly the world\'s biggest ship. She was launched by theCunard line in 1907, at a time of fierce competition for the North Atlantic trade.Lusitania, commanded by Commodore James Watt, was moored at the Liverpoollanding stage for her maiden voyage at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday 7 September 1907. At the timeLusitania was the largest ocean liner in service and would continue to be until the introduction of Mauretaniain November that year. During her eight-year service, she made a total of 202 crossings on the Cunard Line\'s Liverpool-New York Route. In 1915 she was torpedoed and sunkby a German U-boat, causing the deaths of 1,198 passengers.

Keswick School of Industrial Art \"KSIA\" ....
