Handsome Antique 19th Century Japanese Edo Period Shinshinto Signed Wakizashi Sword Tsunanbu
Fine Craftsmanship, , Free Shipping

This is a handsome antique Edo period Wakizashi sword crafted by Akama Tsunanobu of Yonezawa, Japan in July of 1850. This traditional style sword belongs to the Shinshinto period (1781-1876) of sword production. This sheathed sword features elaborate figural menukis and ornately decorated tsuba and kashira. A small signed knife that fits snugly into the sheath. The wooden handle is covered in fish skin and then wrapped in fabric. The sword is accompanied with a fitted purple fabric case (not original to the sword). As pictured, the sword is engraved along the tang for Tsunanobu and the date. Please click here to view an album showing more images of sword. In overall very good condition with some unraveling of the handle wrap. The bit closes to the tsuba is no longer attached to the rest of the wrap or the handle. Scattered losses to the fish skin on the handle. There are knicks and abrasions to the sides of the tsuba. The blade exhibits some abrasions and a few minute scattered knicks to the blade edge. Though we are not experts in Japanese swords, we believe there is a chance the blade was shortened (broken) and resharpened to the present point. As pictured, the blade is not as long as the sheath. Please examine the images for the best indication of condition. Make sure to also review the online album in addition to the images within this listing. The lacquered sheath exhibits dings, scratches and small losses. The small knife exhibits heavy wear to the blade and some loss to the finish on the handle. This condition is consistent with age and use. The total length of the sword and sheath is 25 1/8\". The sword alone is 22 5/8\" and the blade length is 16 1/8\". The width of the habaki is 1\". The fabric sleeve is 29 3/4\" x 3 7/8\". The knife is 8 1/4\" in length. This is beautiful Wakizashi sword and would make a fine addition to your collection.
