This is an absolutely fascinating
antique early 19th century
Chinese
Canton Export
large & square black heavy silk piano shawl.
It is completely and densely embroidered in naturally dyed silk thread
with subtle and colourful flowers, gardens, butterflies, birds,
figures in costume and pagodas.The history of these shawls is fascinating,
After their creation in Canton
they passed through Manila, hence the name.
From there, they made their way to France,
England and Spain where they became
a symbol of bohemian abandon in the evolving world of fashion.This shawl is in antique condition,
there are a couple of tears that need to be backed and stitched to repair
(the largest tear is 3 inches across)
and some holes in one corner of the knotted fringe.
This shawl is mendable and because of the dense embroidery
once mended these defects will be practically invisible.

I am insisting on this because this is the only shawl I have ever had to relist
after a buyer changed her mind about the sale.It is a very original and unique piece
whether you wear it , use it as a decoration element
or keep it as a collector\'s shawl.

and has a very long 17 inch fringe, 5 inches of which is intricately knotted.
