an authentic old and very much used, highly intriguing shaped, Indonesian tribal art object, a

lid / stopper of a medicine container

used by a Datu / Guru / priest of the

Batak People of Sumatra, Indonesia

carved as an antropomorhic face with metal eyes, the shape of the head shows an enlarged chin and a horn-like back head

- for some comparison see the sculptures of the royal / king\'s tomb on Samosir Island, in Lake Toba / Danua Toba / Tobameer -

we can not be more specific about the tribe or people, because this form for the function seems an extreme rarity,

and as far as we know, a carving like this is not documented

it is likely to mention the People of Samosir, Toba Batak or Karo, but an other tribe could also be possible

the patina is absolute authentic, it shows high age, use and handling through many years,

dating is hard, but it is likely to be 19th century or quite older

condition: firm, one metal eye is missing, a piece at the back is missing, this is a recent damage,

there are two quite recent drill holes at the back, see the 11th picture, probably made to attache it to a stand

height: circa 17,5 cm. / 6.9 inch

weight: circa 195 gram
