Antique 19th Century CGAK Common Ghurka Army Knife Nepal Kukri khukuri:
$150.00

This large Kukri is known as a CGAK for “Common Ghurka Army Knife” and is likely from the cache of weapons purchased by International Military Antiques (IMA) and Atlanta Cutlery (AC) from the Royal Nepalese Arsenal in Katmandu, in 2003. It has a hand carved rosewood hilt with steel bolsters. The pommel is inscribed with the number 1 in Nepali. The hand-forged blade has twin fullers along the spine. The chiseled inscription often found on the spines of Ghurka military Kukri (like this one) have a common prefix that roughly translates as “Thrice Honored Chandra” or “Three Shrii Chandra,” a reference to Prime Minister Chandra Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana who ruled Nepal from 1901-1929.The following letter combinations are an abbreviation that denotes a specific unit in the Royal Nepalese Army and the numbers that follow correspond to sub-units. On this Kukri that would be the inscription closest to the hilt. It’s sub-unit designation (looks like the number 3190) does not match the “Thrice Honored…” prefix. This is likely the result of the unit designation being changed by “erasing” the old number and inscribing another. What makes this Kukri especially interesting is the second unit designation (the one closest to the point). It’s lack of the “Thrice Honored Chandra” prefix suggests that this Kukri was already in service in 1901 when the reign of Prime Minister Chandra began. The scabbard is black leather over wood with a brass chape. The leather has some insect damage (small holes) and an old, somewhat sloppy, repair to the leather wrap. It is complete with the original “wallet” and two utility knives (Karda and Chakma), one of which has it’s own Cho. This is an authentic and originalantiqueweapon - guaranteed. Please contact me for additional information or photos.
