RUSSIAN ICON OF THE KAZAN MOTHER OF GOD, SERGIE AKHMAKOV, MOSCOW, 1890.A finely and fully painted image of the famous miracle working image which appeared in the village of Kazan in 1579. Probably a Moscow workshop in the circle of Gurianov. Overlaid with an exquisite silver-gilt, repousse and chased riza with cloisonné enameled corner plaques and champlevé enamel title plaques. The halo and the garments of the Virgin and Christ child overlaid with intricate silver filigree with silver beading. Hallmarked Moscow, dated 1890, Cyrillic makers mark CA, for Sergie Akhmakov, and 84 silver standard. 12.5 x 10.5 inches (31.7 x 26.8 cm).
