Up for your consideration is this antique mid 19th century pasteboard and fabric covered American shield box. This rare example of early Americana features a cotton/linen Flag with 13 stripes and 26 stars. The 26th star was added to the American Flag when the state of Michigan was admitted to the Union in 1837. The U.S. Flag had 26 stars for 8 years, between 1837 and 1845. We see expected oxidation and foxing around the walls of the box. This box, which is believed to be a souvenir from when Michigan received its statehood is still entirely intact with only minor fading and a small area of fraying to the fabric on the upper left corner of the lid.
