Here is a rather interesting antique tooled leather covered polished hardwood interior writing box which is in need of restoration.
To me it looks Regency period.. possibly a military campaign writing box... or an MP or JP or a Diplomat\'s writing case.. its got grandeur about it for sure.
The right person could have this RARE box restored once again to its former glory.. this is no ordinary writing box.
First of all the whole box is covered in this dark green leather ... which has embossed tooling all over it.. the top and bottom are both flat.. as too are the sides... the front and back are rounded.
You will see it has 2/3rds bottom and about a 1/3rd is the hinged top.
It has an INSET metal keyhole plate which has a handle inset too.
The box hinge has ONLY been the leather.. that is why the top section is off....not attached.. not a very good design really.. I have had similar smaller boxes of this period where the hinges are still good.. but this is a heavy item and for them to think the leather would last as a hinge was rather silly.
So look at the inset key hole escutcheon and pull out HANDLE which it also has in it.... there is a name engraved on this plate.. J. L. BURNETT ......the pull out handle has LOST its two small pins that allow it to hinge out from the inset back plate.. these should be easy replaced.
When the box is with the wider bottom section on the table.. you will see this wording J.L. BURNETT is upside down ...which is ODD to say the least.. we know the box is the right way up as the key hole part is correct.. and I can see where the metal plate sits inside and onto the wood ..it can only go in this way....meaning the name is UPSIDE down when the box is put upon a table.
The brass lock inside is a modern replacement as well.. it does not fit the original space ... and the person that put this in has cUt the fine hard wood box lining.. to enable them to take the old lock out and put this one in.. you can see the glue remains and cut marks on the interior wood at this area.
So with the 2/3rds part as the base.. you will see inside it has been lined with polished hardwood.. Teak or Mahogany... it has a full length back section.. this has lost its little leather puller in the centre so the leather hinge lifts up the whole length .. in here you will find... two square end sections.. and INK stains on the wood..for inkwells... and your writing dip ink pens... there are some sections of wood MISSING from in here.. so again they would need to be replaced.
Modern warm central heated house make these sort of boxes fall to bits.. the glue dries out and the bits come loose....there is plenty left in here for you to make the missing parts though.. on one part there is a small spring of steel to hold an inkwell or similar in place whilst travelling.
Also just to mention.. the long box at the back...does NOT fit right to the bottom of the box.. allowing for larger bits of paper to fit under here.. using the full size of the interior base plan for a bit of paper.
As I said the back hinge which was only leather ..is all broken off.. someone at a later date has put cellotape or similar on the leather and its brought the top green surface off the leather down this back edge.. so that will need staining again.
The top 1/3rd now....you can see at the back where there is a small bit of leather missing revealing the wood of the box ...where the leather hinge has come off.... the top of this inside section is leather and one would have written your letters on here.. its got  really nice THISTLE like FLOWER corner pictures...it has 2 arc\'d wear marks on here too...and I cannot determine what has been rubbing here... its missing now whatever it was.
So look to the front edge and see the original key hole lock PLATE part.. this is not a replacement as it fits the leather frotn proper.
Also on this front edge you can see it has two finger nail PUSH BUTTON catches.. these originally HELD the top leather hinged part in place.. this has had some roulgh use probs from later generations NOT knowing how to open this box part.. so the two brass sliders are complete.. and still work.. BUT look now at the leather hinged top work surface.. you will have to use a fine knife or similar to put down the slit and hinge the top up... the soft wood has all broken away on BOTH sides... allowing the top to lift up as and when now.. this could be restored with a bit of thought.
So once the top flap is open you will see the beautiful hardwood polished interior Teak or Mahogany again.. in great condition.. the underside of the flap you just lifted up has the original green fine ribbon CRISS CROSS design with 12 fine steel pins holding it all in place.. 1 is missing in the centre..notes - letters etc would be put in here.
As I said at the start of this description ...this is NO ordinary writing box.
Its NOT a slope type either..its a FLAT topped example which does need  restoration.
The box is 15 inch long x 11 and 3/4 inch wide x nearly 4 and a 1/2 inch deep....the front inset plate is 5 and a 1/2 inch long x 1 and 3/4 close up pictures for more details and condition.
