Description

Antique Continental porcelain snuff box, likely French made, possibly Sevres, in the 18th century Meissen style. This rectangular porcelain box has a slightly domed hinged lid and rounded corners. It has gilt metal/ormulu mountings. The decoration is handpainted. The hinged lid features a courting couple in a gilt cartouche and the sides are adorned with floral sprays. The blue and white fish scales make it an extra special piece. In many aspects, the box resembles the boxes made by Meissen in the 18th century, but I do not believe this particular box was produced by Meissen (even though it comes to me from an antiques dealer private collection and he believes it to be Meissen). The blue underglaze cross sword mark on the bottom is slightly different than the Meissen marks. The hand painting, although very nice, is likely not quite fine enough for Meissen. There is an additional mark on the ormulu mount (see photo) that may be helpful in identification. It resembles a Serves mark. It is a very old box. The shape and decoration could date this box to the 1750-1800 time period, but I think the better estimate is 19th century. Lots of enlarged photos are below. You be the judge. SIZE: About 3 1/8\"W x 2 1/4\"D x 2\"H.

MARKS: Blue underglaze mark on base. Impressed mark on interior ormulu clasp. See photos below.

CONDITION: Antique item. The top/lid porcelain appears to be in fine condition and the hand painting is crisp and clear. The ormulu mounts have not been cleaned. Hinge works properly and it snaps shut. The issues are with the base. On the right side at the bottom edge, there is a flaw (possible a small chip repair) as shown in photo. There are irregularities to the porcelain at both corners where the porcelain meets the mount and some along that front edge. I think it is possible that the bottom porcelain may have come loose from the mount at some point in history and when it was remounted, the mount may not have been placed quite far enough down. On the interior, there is a damage spot as shown in enlarged photo below and some dirt/discoloration around the edges near the mounts. On the base porcelain, the painted floral sprays are in fine condition. There is some wear to the lower portion of the gilt bands.
