Description

Circa late 19th century Italian .800 silver bowl in the neoclassical style attributed to Demetrio Kremos, Rome. The motifs on the two opposite sides are different, but they both appear to be courting scenes. In one scene, notice there is a third person in the background (likely the female mother) observing with a watchful eye and a bit of panic. In the other scene, the maiden is turning her head away from her suitor. Lovely for display or use for sugar or small candies, like little mints.

SIZE: About 5 3/8\" wide (handle to handle edge), about 3\" deep and about 2 5/8\" tall.

MARKS: KREMOS crown 800 mark as shown in photo. Demetrio Kremos (of Macedonian descent) worked in Rome, Italy in partnership with Sotirios Voulgaris (Bulgari) in the early 1880s. The partnership dissolved by the mid-1880s; Kremos continued to work as a silversmith, while Voulgaris went on to found the Bulgari empire. Although a crown in a mark often suggests the possibility of German silver, there is no German crescent moon mark here. I was able to confirm (by finding another example) that Demetrio Kremos, the 19th c. Italian silversmith, did in fact used a crown 800 mark. I have included two photos of a snuff box sold by sale on in May 2015 for $316 by an English dealer; it has the same crown 800 Kremos mark and an additional \'Roma\', confirming that Kremos of Rome used a crown 800 mark on his work. I have also included some photos below of other Kremos works, including a silver purse in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (with very similar swirls, images and techniques), as well as several additional items. My knowledge leans toward American and Scandinavian silver (not Continental silver), so please see the marks and judge the maker and country of origin for yourself.

CONDITION: Antique item. Sells \"as is\". This is .800 silver, below the purity of sterling (.925). A touch of verdigris in the floral motif on one handle and a few other tiny spots. Tarnish in deep recesses. There are four feet, so there is a very slightly typical wobble. PLEASE VIEW ALL CLOSE UP PHOTOS AS THEY ARE A MATERIAL PART OF THE CONDITION REPORT.
