Description:

This is a sprawling testament to America’s history, prosperity, and scenic wonders as they existed in the last decade of the 19th century. Profusely illustrated with hundreds of engravings and featuring almost 700 pages of narrative text.

Why the editors titled this magnificent work COUNTRIES OF THE WESTERN WORLD is a mystery to me. It does contain some information about America\'s neighbors Canada and Mexico, and a bit about South America, but more than three-quarters of the book is devoted to the History and Scenery of the United States.

This book celebrates America’s proud past and her promising future. It chronicles the rise of the American nation from a series of crude outlying colonies to a burgeoning world power teeming with modern cities. A republic of individual states united by a common commitment to liberty and justice for all. A land of unlimited potential, where steam locomotives rode iron rails carrying hopeful emigrants to new lives in the wide open west, hurtling past vistas of unmatched beauty and natural splendor …

This dramatic record of the great American nation was authored by the renowned 19th-century historian Benson Lossing, whose previous works include Seventeen Hundred and Seventy-Six, The Pictorial Field-Book of the Revolution, and The Pictorial Field-Book of the Civil War.

To give you a better idea of what awaits you in this fascinating antique book, I have included some helpful details below, starting with a detailed summary of the Contents and a generous sampling of the historic illustrations.

I hope you’ll take a moment to have a look.
