Frame photographed outside, it is a richer brighter gold insideHere is a very beautiful antique American Barbizon style picture frame, circa 1860-70s time period. It is wood with applied compo decorations of Acanthus leaves in the corners and roses and other applied designs on the surround.The finish is gilded gold and is the original finish. The frame is VERY HEAVY and solid. It is in good/very good as is vintage condition. It does have some gilding /compo off the back edges n a few spots. It also has age cracks through the compo in the front, which is normal for antique composition( gesso to Americans) frames.
the entire frame measures 26 x 32 ins., the back insert rabbet fit is 18 x 24 ins. ( exact is 18 1/8 x 24 1/8 ins.). The molding is about 5 ins. wide.
The frame was difficult to photograph as all antique gilded frames are. Outside the pictures are a duller gold than it is in real life. Inside they are a darker gold than it is in real life. It is a true bright gilt gold color.I chose the outside pictures as they do show the details of the frame better.This frame can be used horizontally or vertically, it has old holes in the back showing it was used vertically before. Because of the weight of this frame and the delicate nature of the compo surround it will require a very large box for shipment. Ship costs will reflect that fact.
This frame is a museum quality picture frame, perfect for a landscape, portrait, still life or to be made in to a mirror.
