Antique African American Folk Art Alligator Carve Cherry Wood Cane Walking Stick:
This nice, untouched 100+ year old American cane has worn dry old finish and crisp carving. Discovered in a Detroit, Michigan home, it measures 29” x 4 7/8” with app. 1” diameter shank. The handle is finely carved with the tail of the alligator flowing gracefully to one side and the wood appears to be cherry. You will note a dark, shiny 7” section at the end of the cane: this was wrapped in old cloth friction tape instead of using a rubber tip. The original finish was protected and revealed when we removed the ugly tape. There are no splits or obvious losses (aside from smoothing of the details in the handle from handling over the years); the end of the cone is worn from use.
