Antique American 1892 Sterling Silver & Gilt 4 Piece Tea Set Barbour Silver Co:
$3355.41

Here for your consideration is a truly magnificent and extremely rare, antique American, circa 1892, fully hallmarked, sterling silver and gilt, four piece tea service, with exquisite engraved decoration, and made by one of the very best, early American silversmiths, the Barbour Silver Company.

A stunning silver tea service, comprising spirit kettle, burner and stand, teapot, lidded sugar and milk jug, all featuring an aesthetic, finely engraved, etched and chased, applied scroll and floral foliage decoration, to octagonal bodies, with giltinteriors and stamped sterling.

This exquisite silver tea service has absolutely stunning detailed workmanship. All pieces are fully hallmarked BSC in a square cartouche for Barbour Silver Company. They\'re also all stamped with the pattern number 1317 and most importantly all stamped sterling. Please note this delightful tea service does not have the \'IS\' lettering which means this tea service dates prior to the company being absorbed by the International Silver Company, pieces after 1898 were marked \'IS\' along with the Barbour markings. An extremely rare silver tea service basically because the Barbour Silver Company was only producing silver for just six years between 1892-1898.

Considering this tea service has remained together for approximately 124 years it\'s in fantastic original condition, with no splits, repairs or damage. The tea service does have some beautiful age related silver patina, commensuratewith its 124 years of age, but nothing unusual. Honestly this is quite simply probably the best American four piece tea service, I\'ve seen, in thirty years of antique dealing. A very impressive and heavy tea service, with a total combinedsilver weight of 2945 grams or 103.5 troy oz !!

Pleasetake time to look at all 12 photos to fully appreciate theamount of workmanship that\'s gone into making this delightful tea service.

Barbour Silver Company ...

In 1882 Samuel Barbour moved from Chicago to New Haven, Connecticut, where he and his brother Charles joined in forming the Barbour Brothers Co, marketers ofsilver-plate products that were made by I.J. Steane and Co of Hartford. The brothers were working from premises at 64 Market Street, Hartford, Connecticut. In 1892 after ten years, the Barbour brothers original partnership was succeeded by the Barbour Silver Company, which also succeeded Steane and Co. The 1889 edition of Geer\'s city directory has them listed as Barbour Silver Company,Silversmiths, 62-64 Market street, Hartford Connecticut. In 1898 the Barbour Silver Co became one of the first silver firms to be absorbed by the International Silver Co, of Meriden, Connecticut.
