This sale is for a vintage “American” gold scale. This scale is portable and was probably used to measure gold and other precious metals . Balance Scale & weights come in a Swartchild & Company box. The box has ink printing that describes weight conversions (grains to pennyweights to ounces to pounds.)
Scale; The robust scale is a precision balance beam type made of gilded brass with two pans, one for the counterweights and the other for the item to be weighed. All these parts come in a very nice wooden box that has two hinges and a small clasp for locking the top of the lid, ensuring that the box will not openunexpectedly. The scale is designed to hang from a finger or from a stand or some other stationary object. Stand is not included. The beam is marked with the German words for patent pending.
Weights; Comes with two complete and original sets of weights. The brass Troy weights are stored in a wooden block and the aluminum fractional weights are in the Swartchild tin container. The weights range from 20 to 1 Troy ounces and 50 to 4 Grains, a total of 12 weights altogether giving the user the ability to make precise and accurate measurements.
There are afew scratches on the wooden box but the box isstructurallysound.
Box measures 7 1/2" long by 4" wide, 1 3/8" tall.Box, scales and weights show wear from age and use. Overall in Very GOOD condition.
