The main frame is made of a hardwood - possibly rosewood - and is inlaid with a very intricate, geometric design with pieces of metal wood, bone and mother of pearl. This type of design is known as sadeli work. It is similar in stye and technique to the UK\'s Tunbridge ware. The lid top and box front, back and sides have carved hardwood panels that I think may possibly be sandalwood. The top depicts views of the Taj Mahal and the sides have a carved floral scroll. It stands on four turned brass bun feet. The base has a faded green felt covering. The inside has a purple felt lined lid and base, which is a little faded. The box has the original working lock and key.The box dates from around 1900 -1920 and may have suffered some losses to the inlay over the years. However it is still an attractive item for display and use.
