~Welcome to my sale for this very pretty early 20th century brooch~
This is a really nice looking brooch executed in the \'Liberty Style\' that was so popular during the first decade of the 20th century - the names of course derives from the famous London store of Liberty & Co - they proved to be front runners in the fashions of the day an their style and designs heavily influenced designers both in the U.K. and further afield - some Liberty designs were even directly copied by other manufactures.
The brooch has been made in sterling silver (as marked to the back) but doesn\'t have any hallmarks as such - this is not unusual for this era and even the top makers sometimes only put their makers marks on items - this piece doesn\'t have a makers marks either so it\'s difficult to say who made it, but it\'s undeniably a good quality piece.
The front of the brooch shows an organic style design that has a pebbled effect background - these areas have then been over enamelled with a combination of shimmering blue, green and white enamel colours - the blue / green combination was probably one of most popular colours of the art nouveau era and many pieces by the top manufactures used this style.
To the rear of the piece is a simple tube hinge and C clasp mechanism which is perfectly correct for this era.
The sterling silver stamp is to the centre of the reverse.
Looking at the style of design, the workmanship, the patina and style of clasp I can confidently say this item will date from the early years of the 20th century - circa 1900 - 1910.
The brooch measures 3.2cm across and is 1.8cm top to bottom - the total unpacked weight is 3.7g.
The condition of the item all round is excellent - naturally, an item of this age rarely survives without normal signs of wear and use and this piece shows a good patina through use and handling - importantly there is no damage to the enamel work, which is as good today as the day it was made.Both the hinge and the clasp work exactly as they should.
The brooch would make an excellent addition to a collection of early 20th century pieces, or could (and should) be worn as was originally intended.
