Antique Ayutthaya Period Terra Cotta Head of Buddha, 14/15th C. Museum Quality.

Description: An exquisite and extremely rare 14th to 15th century Ayutthaya style Terra-Cotta image of Buddha, a fragmented section typical of those found at the Ayutthaya period, sensitively carved in exalted human form, with exacting detail and aesthetic alignment of the features. xxxxxx This rather large head was masterfully carved with a serene expression, the downcast face has slender partially open eyes with double incised borders, arched eyebrows connect above a prominently long nose of ovoid form, with broad lips slightly recessed at the corners. The curvature of the mouth establishes the images gentle and compassionate expression. A smooth band separates the face from his hairline, blending gracefully into his elongated earlobes that frame the face. The hair is arranged in large snail-shell curls, individually formed to whorl right, rising up to a gently domed Ushnisha. xxxxxx Originally modelled as a full figured image, this fragmented portion is an excellent example of Ayutthaya\'s artistry and iconographic styling of the period, rendered mostly solid, from hand-gathered earthen clay of reddish-brown colour, sun dried, then oven-baked in a low temperature kiln, with a naturally aged spotted surface patina.

xxxxxxThe piece reveals a well weathered and worn surface, unaltered, with no condition issues, with the exception of obvious incidentals, such as, minor lost of hair curls front and back, along with a small portion of the facial band broken off. There is a hairline fracture running down the face, caused by solid mass separating from heat, when fired in the kiln, it is structurely strong and \'NOT\' a crack. Other minor surface degradation, chips, dents, and evidence of selective erosion over time, are a normal part of the sculptures patina, attesting to the age of the piece as maintained.

Data Observation: Excellent Condition, with small surface abrasions as noted. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
