Pictured and offered for sale is a rare Civil War Gunners clinometer, a elevation tool used along with charts for determining proper cannon barrel height distance ratio. The numbered brass ruled scale represents degrees of angle as the brass tube containing a glass leveling vial with bubble can be raised and lowered as calculated, to raise or lower cannon barrel angle height for distance requirements. A unique feature exists, the brass tubular housing for the glass vial and leveling bubble slides opens and closes to protect the exposed glass. Seen in the pictures is the open position, closed the tube becomes shorter sliding within itself. Both ends of the brass tube have for griping, a coin edge. I have not cleaned up all the green substance that forms on brass over time, therefore, I have not operated the sliding function of the brass tube. I have taken pictures of this area for you to review. Impressed into the wood is \"No. 2199\" . There are no other makers markings existing. SIZE 12 \" overall total length, brass bound rosewood.
