This picture frame was owned by my grandparents. I recently found it in the attic of the family farm where I grew up. The frame has several cracks on the edges that are pointed out in one of the photos. However, the glass is free of cracks.
The frame was purchased from the Chicago Portrait Company in the late 20\'s/early 30\'s. Typically, rural salesmen travelled throughout the countryside to solicit old photographs of reveredancestors. These were made into impressive portraits suitable for framing.
This frame accompanied a portrait thatwas made of a family member. We are retaining the portrait. The frame, whichincluded theglass and the back, had a price of $10.50 and the extra cost of the portrait was minimal as the real money was in the frames. Purchasing a portrait like this in a rural community was quite pricey for its time. Therefore the picture was typically placed in aprominent place in the house, likely on the wall in the living room at the farm.
