ITEM DESCRIPTION:Antique, cast metal wall hanging or candelabra. From research, this item dates to early 1800s, done in style of early Christian iconography of Byzantine Empire. Wonderful complex pattern of crosses and circles. Central cross has double sided raised plates, making it three dimensional. Tiny double circle motif all over every piece of flat work. Large relief image of St. George the Dragonslayer at top, and two double eagles with crowns at bottom, both reflect Russian Orthodox influence. The Byzantine Empire was a complex mix of Roman, Greek, Russian and other influences.I believe this to be cast brass. There is a very dark patina over all, but when scraped off,reveals bright gold colored metal. You can see areas in the cut out sections where all metal was not removed in the casting process. There are hooks on either side of the two candle cups, and one at bottom. I don\'t know what these are for. This may have been used in a church or other religious setting. It is a fantastic piece of art. (Also, at the time of this listing, a nearly identical piece was listed at $500 on anothersale site.)The piece measures 25\" long, and 14.5\" wide. It appears to be complete. Could be cleaned but personally I would not do that -- has the patina of ages on it right now. A bit of wax still in cups.
