Offered is an antique, circa 1910 ORIGINAL OIL ON WOOD BOARD painting in its original embossed wood frame. It is SIGNED on the lower right \"G. VIVIAN\". The painting is an architectural landscape at sunset, done is muted colors denoting dusk, with a sunset in the background. The architecture of the buildings as well as the tall cyprus trees in the background say to me that the scene is in Italy, or in any case European.
The painting itself measures 10 1/2\" x 8 1/2\". The frame measures 13\" x 11 1/2\". Both the painting and the frame are in excellent old condition, with only light age toning.
G. Vivian is a listed artist, and has been sited in askart.com, Davenport\'s, The Artist\'s Bluebook, Who\'s Who in American Art and Schwarz-Philadelphia. He was born in 1864 (I believe in Italy), then lived in New Jersey here in America. He is known for painting architecture and landscapes. His work has sold at Christie\'s. He had exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design. He was productive during the late 19th century, and before 1950.
Frankly, it has been a bit difficult to sort out his biography, because I think there has been confusion over the years with an earlier artist also named George Vivian (1798-1873). So, I will leave it to you experts to make final determinations. In any case, this is an original old painting by Vivian, and is not a copy.
I have not removed the painting from its frame (which is original to it) in order to look at the edges of the wood panel. Therefore, I am not absolutely positive, but I believe the panel was prepared with a clear mastic or varnish of some sort before painting. There is a red & white sticker on the back, but I can\'t make out what the penciled words say. Take a look at the photo and see if you can read it. In addition, it appears to me that the signature was written with the back end of a brush. Therefore, there is an open space in the center part of each letter, and a bit of \"skipping\" over the textured relief of the paint strokes under the letters. Please take a look at the photos.
