MAGNIFICENTANTIQUECHINESE BRONZE OX CENSER
RARE AND EXQUISITE QUALITY Late Ming/ Early Qing Dynasty (1600s -1700s)

Exquisite, Chinese bronze censerof exceptionally fine quality. Striking formfeaturing a young boy riding astride a highly detailed ox. The casting is superb and bears a spectacular patinawith very early lacquer coating that has been worn from handling and appreciation over the centuries. The master artisan who created this piece did a wonderful job of bringing lifelike detail to the figures, with the bull's long curving horns, swirling fur, muscular body, and tranquil expression. The boy is clad in a silk robe, and sits cheerfully on the back of the ox, held on by a small pin. A rope, bearing traces of red lacquer, hangs loose around the tame bull's neck. Even the underside is detailed, with the bull's legs and feet carefully tucked beneath him. A tasteful masterpiece.

The traditional Chan symbolism of the censer is taken from the famous Buddhist story of the ten bulls, whichillustrates the ten stages of a practitioner's progression towards the purification of the mind and enlightenment. In the story, thewild oxsymbolizes the inferior nature that the boy must capture and subdue.Theboy nowsits upon the calm ox. The struggle is over, theboy has attained the state of enlightment.

This exquisite censer dates to the late Ming to early Qing Dynasty, 1600s to 1700s. It is in excellent antique condition with wear commensurate with age. We note several very early areas of repair to the hind end of the ox that were done prior to the lacquer and may be original to the time of casting. They do not detract from the overall magnificence of the piece, and actually add to the patina and character. The censer measures approximately 10" in length and 5.5" tall. An exquisite bronze censer representing the finest of theChinese aesthetic, and a sublime centerpiece for the discriminating connoisseur of world-classAsian antiques.
